About

The Seamstress - Dr. Lisa

My grandmother, Margaret Magruder, taught me to sew when I was 9 years old. She also taught me to crochet and knit, but the sewing is what stuck. For decades, I've made clothing for myself. For years, I made my mother's holiday outfit for her hospital Christmas party.

There are dozens of people who have received crocheted baby blankets, complete with the baby's name hand stitched into the boarder.

Quilting is my newest expression of creating heirlooms for little ones.

Each quilt features a hand-drawn sunrise pattern inspired by one of my favorite drawings as a child—the sunrise coming up over hills. I hand-draw every pattern, so no two quilts are ever identical. My quilts combine vibrant African fabrics I've personally sourced during my travels to Ghana and Uganda with the craftsmanship I've honed over decades of sewing.

Every quilt tells a story—both mine and the fabric's. And now, you get to add the story that will make it an heirloom.

Images are of outfits I've made over the past several years.

About

The Fabrics

The fabrics in my quilts come from my travels to Ghana where I personally select each piece from local vendors at the Makola Market in Accra, as well as luxury stores like Vlisco and Woodin, known for their high-end African wax print fabrics and new collections. There's also a Ghanaian fabric I purchased in Kampala, Uganda at Edro Designs.

Most of the fabrics I use are GTP (Guaranteed Turkish Print) wax prints—vibrant, durable textiles with a rich and complex history. Originally created by Dutch colonizers attempting to mimic Indonesian batik for the African market, these fabrics were rejected in Indonesia but embraced and transformed by West Africans into something entirely their own.

Today, GTP wax prints are a cornerstone of African cultural expression, with each pattern carrying meaning and stories passed down through generations.

It's a labor of love

Questions you might have:

Who sews the blankets?

I sew each blanket personally. Actually, I do every step of the process myself. From laying the drawing paper out, to drawing out the design, selecting the fabrics by mix-matching pieces to see what works, to cutting them pieces out. It's truly a labor of love.

Can I track my order?

Absolutely! Once your order has been processed and shipped, you will receive an email with a tracking number and a link to monitor your shipment in real time. You can also log in to your account on our website to check the status of your order at any time, ensuring you know exactly when to expect your delivery.

What is your return policy?

We want you to love your purchase. If you’re not completely satisfied, we accept returns within 30 days of delivery on eligible items. Returned items must be unused, in their original packaging, and in resalable condition. Please note that return shipping fees may apply, and some items, such as clearance or custom pieces, may be final sale. Visit our Returns page for step-by-step instructions on how to start a return.

Are these quilts meant to be used or displayed?

Absolutely. These quilts are meant to be used—in the crib, on the sofa for naps, or spread out on the floor for playtime. Many families use them over a receiving or swaddling blanket during the baby stage.

Or, you can simply purchase one to hang as wall art from the start.

When you’re ready, the quilt can also be retired to the wall as a keepsake.

Is each quilt truly one of a kind?

Yes. Every quilt is one of a kind. Fabric choices, patterns, and layouts vary, and once a particular fabric is gone, it may not be available again. No two quilts are ever exactly the same.

What size are the quilts?

Each quilt is sized for baby use while also working beautifully as wall art. Because every piece is handmade and one of a kind, exact dimensions may vary slightly. Specific measurements are listed on each product page.

Are the quilts washable?

These quilts are made to be used and loved. To keep yours looking and feeling its best:

For care:

Spot clean with a gentle cleanser as needed

Or machine wash on delicate, in cold water

Hang and air dry, out of direct sunlight, or tumble dry on low heat

All fabrics are pre-washed, and the batting is an 80/20 cotton-poly blend to help reduce shrinkage. Some minimal shrinkage may still occur, but it only adds to the quilt’s softness and lived-in comfort.
